I'm thinking the house would look rather plain without them, just brick walls and roof. Are you thinking of replacing them with anything? Plus in the summer they would provided needed shading and help the house stay cooler.
Remove them for the winter, then see if you need them for the summer: you can always paint them a less grandmotherly colour/pattern. Ditch the small red one on the side.
Also, ditch the mailbox and get one under the porch.
so far, Anthony is the most practical thinking, and Michael has demostrated the most creativity. I think I'm gonna ditch them, and then see how the front looks. the country mailbox will also be nixed, although I might store it in the basement and resurect it at a later date, if I want to sell the house - I've heard it's good for the resale value.
They face south? You need them in the summer to keep the house cool. Specially cause you know cheap dutchmen don't pay for a/c. I think you should recover them, maybe with a white on black, skull and crossbones... or a nice Harley Davidson motif. Let the neighbours know that they can't push you around! Dave t
As usual, someone will have to give the correct advice. Leave them up at least one full cycle of seasons. Then you can make an informed decision...you never know why they are up there !!!

ditch them, they're rather grandmotherly, but the house is lovely, congrats!
ps. anonymous is kaite burkholder, i'm clearly not yet blog-comment savvy.
Ditch Them! Congrats on the house though!
ditch them, they are not cool and they obstruct your view

By the way, I like the place Dave!

I think you should use the awnings as sleds for the hill across the road. Or as a shelter for my couch/ski apparatus.

I say take them down, but put them over the toilets in your bathroom(s). Barring this, the next best thing would be some sort of a pseudo-canopy bed.
done and done.
Missing my calling as an interior designer,

Speaking of AC, is that the unit on the side there? Another practical idea: can you use them to shield the AC for the winter?

Dad
You call yourself and Engineer. So disappointed.
...make them retractable so you don't have to choose.
Tyler
Leave the awnings up for now Dave.
